FAITH || How do you want you: Saltless, Salty or just Salt?

You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavour? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled under foot as worthless. Matthew 5:13 (NLT)

Hello Royalty.

Hope your new week has started off very well.

Over the weekend, while studying the Bible and spending some time with God, I came across the above scripture again and I began to think on it a lot. Jesus tells us we are the salt of the earth. We all know salt can be good for the body. The scientists call it sodium. It helps your nerves and muscles and it helps to control fluid balance. Now I’m not totally certain what all of that means, but I know that when cooking, we add salt to taste.  So, it’s literally the life of the food. Now Jesus talks about losing flavour. Salt automatically becomes worthless when it has lost its flavour.  If it’s no use, we throw it away. As believers, we are important to the life of the earth. We are not just here to sit around and occupy space, hence losing flavour; we are here to make the meal of the earth the most delicious.  Now I know that as you are reading this,  you probably already understand these points.

But let’s look at it this way, have you ever found yourself trying to be salty? Well I have, and this is where we get it wrong most times. We already understand that we should not be saltless and we have to add value to the world, but sometimes, we begin to become who we are not. Let me explain. When I cook sometimes, a friend or family member takes a bite and they’re like, “Not enough salt”, and this has happened quite a number of times, not because I’m a bad cook ? but because I’m trying not to make the food salty. At the back of my mind, I’m thinking if the salt is not enough, you can sprinkle some. If it’s too salty, you might leave people hungry. Do you know what happens when there’s too much salt in the body? It holds on to the water in your body and hey, diseases are knocking already. So as good as salt can be, it can also be bad.

However, this is what we do! We know we’re salt but we are trying to add to who we are, trying to be who we are not, trying to jump our process, trying to live in the future, not believing that we are enough and bam! We become salty and nobody wants us. Then your pillow becomes a shoulder to cry on, after all I’ve done, is this what I deserve? You need to realize at every point in your life that you have just enough light for the step you’re on. You need to let it sink in you that you are just enough and you need to trust your growth process. In Job 22, Elisha said to Job in verse 2, “Can a person do anything to help God? Can even a wise person be helpful to him?” Do you also remember the teaching of Jesus in Luke 12:25 where He asked if any of us by worrying can add one cubit to our stature or as the NLT puts it, a single moment to our life? No, we can’t! So as they say, take a chill pill and keep your eyes on the one who made you salt in the very first place. I love these words by Chynna Phillips, Jesus just wants me to allow myself to be carved into His image. The more I do, the more I realize that I become more of myself…more of who I authentically, truly, am. The more I surrender myself to Jesus, the more I actually become me.”

Truly, we find ourselves and our place in him. Don’t you, again, go seeking validation somewhere else. Don’t judge yourself by the standards of social media. Go to the true standard and it’s high time you stopped being who you never were. You know what?  While trying to add to who we are, we can lose ourselves. So enjoy where you are now and embrace it. Someone else is already where you wish to be? Good for them. Who told you your wishes are the highest levels of your success! So darling,

Don’t lose your flavour.

Don’t lose your shine.

You are just enough.

You have just enough light for the step you’re on!

  1. Don’t try to be like another. The more we surrender to God, the more we find ourselves and be who we truly should be. Thanks for the reminder.
