FAITH || LIVING (and maintaining) A LIFE of SURRENDER.

Hello Royalty.

How are you doing? How was your weekend? I hope you have a most splendid week ahead.

You know, the word “surrender” is a pretty much common term in our Christian walk. Don’t you hear it all the time? Has it ever bothered you? You have probably thought to yourself, “How do I live this life of surrender?” or “I don’t feel as connected to God as I used to be”. This post is essentially here to respond to some of those thoughts.

Last week, while studying my Bible, I came across Ephesians 5:18-20 in the Message Version. (The Message Version currently has my heart, BTW.) These verses say,

Don’t drink too much wine. That cheapens your life. Drink the Spirit of God, huge draughts of him. Sing hymns instead of drinking songs! Sing songs from your heart to Christ. Sing praises over everything, any excuse for a song to God the Father in the name of our Master, Jesus Christ

A Life of Surrender

How amazing! Living a life of surrender means living a life by the Spirit and living by the Spirit means living by light. As believers, we are never fully independent until we fully depend on Christ. That idea is not very much popular in today’s culture. Rather, we are advised to strive, to do it alone, to be an “orphan” as the case may be, but this so called advice will get you and me in trouble. On the contrary, we ought to yield, to do it at He leads and to always realize that we have a father; in other words, no believer is an orphan.

However, the question is “If yielding to the Holy Spirit is key to living and maintaining a life of surrender, how does it work?” In Ephesians 5:18, Paul says, “Be filled with the Holy Spirit” The word Paul uses in the original language is pleusta, which means “filled, intoxicated, overcome by a power greater than your own”. This word was also used in the present tense and it referred to continuous action, kind of like saying “be being filled” or “be continually filled”.

Follow me closely, royalty!

You are probably thinking, “But don’t we have all of the Holy Spirit as soon as we become children of God or at baptism, so why do we need to be continually filled???” The real question, however, is “although I have ALL of the Holy Spirit, does the Holy Spirit have all of me?” This is where surrender comes in – in the many fillings, in the reckless abandon, in the yielding, in the independence which only comes from dependence, in the childlike faith that whispers, “Papa, I can’t do anything on my own”, and in laying down all of our “old flames to carry new fire” (I should pay Hillsong for this line) – so that’s it! It’s one baptism, but many fillings – it is how we stay on key and keep our head in the game – shining as lights in this dark world.

I really want to know your thoughts. Leave a comment and let’s all talk about this life of surrender.
