INSPIRATION | Let’s call it my Florence Foster Jenkins mojo!

Hello Royalty!

Ah-ha did I just type that? Y-E-S!

I haven’t actually been here in two weeks and it feels like forever. This time around, my phone crashed and I had to go offline. It was a hard decision, but it was an unavoidable one. I missed the blog. I missed Instagram. I missed…a lot. But in those almost-two-weeks of being offline, I spent most of the time sinking in books and unwinding from every kind of stress. So I guess you can say I’m back….with a bang! Also, I think I am slowly starting to have a thing for movies. Yes, I just said that. But that’s if it’s on TV and I seem to have some time on my hands at the moment.

Florence Foster Jenkins, as played by Meryl Streep, is one of the movies I got up my sleeves. I know it’s not a recent movie, so you’ve probably watched it (unless you’re like me who would watch a 2005 movie in 2017 like it’s not a big deal). I liked this movie because it made me laugh and I was amused that someone who did not actually know how to sing would term herself as an opera singer! She was the talk of the town, a terrible singer, the world’s worst opera singer..but Florence sang on. She even went ahead to publish her records. Gimme a break! The movie is actually based on a true story. It’s a biographical one, so in case you have not watched it, this actually happened sometime in the oldies…how interesting huh?. It was all laughter and amusement for me until some part before the end. Before I get to that part, here’s a little bit about the movie – Florence had a husband, St. Clair, who would not tell her she couldn’t sing. On the contrary, he cheered her on, organised her concerts, got involved in selling tickets and did his possible best to be by her side. After one of her concerts, a particular newspaper had told the naked truth about Florence. St Clair had gone with Florence’s pianist to buy all copies of this newspaper around the house…and went on to read the breathtaking reviews of the other papers. Somehow, Florence still got her hand on one of the copies of that newspaper and this was when she saw the reality of what had been going around town. Guess what? She passed out.

As she began to recover, and this was my best part – less amusing, but actually inspiring, she held St Clair’s hands in hers and said, “some may say I couldn’t sing, but no one can say I didn’t sing” and that’s what I call my Florence Foster Jenkins mojo – the will to try and fail, rather than remain afraid to try. And believe you me, Florence Foster Jenkins became a well respected member of the music society because she still had an undiluted love for music, even though she couldn’t sing…sigh.
